First day of racing on Menemsha Pond – July 6th

I entered my first Menemsha Pond race on July 6th.  In July and August there are weekly races on Wednesday and Saturday on Menemsha Pond.  You ca read all about it on the Sailmv site: http://tinyurl.com/menemsha-race. My wife, Maja, and I were going to race together, but the timing didn’t work out for my mother, and my sister and brother in-law wimped out of babysitting, so I ended up single handling.  It was a very windy and gust day!  Blowing 17-20 with gusts up to 25.  I certainly learned a lot about the Three Sisters on this first day of racing.  To start with:
  • The main sheet is too short and made for some exciting gusts where water was coming over the side of the boat
  • The jib sheets are too long, making it dangerous in the cockpit
  • The kick-up rudder kicked up, without my realizing it making it very hard to steer
  • I broke my tiller extension IMG_3321
Even with all this fun, I managed to take a 3rd place and a 4th place. Lovin’ having my own boat.

2013 Launch of the Three Sisters

Its been two years since I lasted sailed the Three Sisters.  Last summer we spent three weeks in Slovakia and we were only in the vineyard for the a long 4th of July weekend and decided not to launch her. In 2011, my friend Jamin and I shrink wrapped the boat which was a fun project and much easier then I had actually expected.  Good news is it held up just fine and outside of one hole where some leaves got it, she was in great shape. Gave her a good cleaning, even took off the floor boards and cleaned out underneath.  Checked and re-taped all the cotter pins. When for a great sail on Saturday after launching. Will be back in early July for about 3 weeks for some great sailing and relaxing.

Glad This isn’t my sailboat

Check out this story of a sailboat getting free of its mooring in Boston Harbor and interfering with Logan Airport traffic; runaway-sailboat-causes-delays-at-logan-airport. You’d certainly hate to find out this was your sailboat. I am still amazed at the idea of leaving your boat at a mooring.    You tie up your boat to a floating ball, close the hatch, and walk away.  Especially when you keep your boat in a different town from where you live.
