2013 Rhodes19 Summer Racing

Well it was a good summer for racing.  I participated in two racing series this summer, Rhodes 19 Tuesday night racing at Courageous Sailing and the July racing series on Menemsha Pond put on by Sail MV.  Both are great organizations, tons of fun, and community focused. At Courageous, I was partnered with Dylan Callahan, a longtime sailing buddy.  I unfortunately missed a lot of the races this year because of work travel, but we still managed to take 2nd in the fleet over all.  I managed to pull of a bullet, and a few second places while at the helm, but all the credit goes to Dylan this season for showing up for nearly every race and competitively sailing in everyone.  Way to go Dylan. At SailMV, my partner in crime was no other than my uncle, Lang Gerhard.    Lang is a full time MV resident and we had a great time taking 3rd overall in the July series on the Three Sisters.  As with any racing, there was great yelling, laughing, camaraderie and post-race beer celebrations. Can’t wait for next season!!!

Fixed and Racing

Fixed the tiller extension, replaced the main and jib sheets, and got my uncle to crew for the next round Menemsha racing.  Took two firsts in our first day of racing together, and two thirds in our second day of racing. Had an amazing start on our last race and led for a lot of the race, but then sailed to low on the downwind leg and got passed by a Mariner and a 470.  I should have sailed high and cover, but didn’t.  On the final upwind leg, I made up a bunch of distance, and ended 2 boat lengths behind.  Live and learn. The wind is pretty consistent on Menemsha Pond, out of the SW.  It was kick 15-20 on day and 5-10 on the second day with  a fun squall that blew through. I head off island now for a few weeks.  In August my uncle and I will be racing on his cat boat, “Sweet” for the August series of Menemsha races.  Stay tuned!!!

Who Says AC 34 racing isn’t just like dinghy racing?

Here is a great video of the Venice regatta of the AC World Series. Toward the end of the video there are two races, one a match race and one a fleet race where you get a great feel for the on boat racing. Remember these are 42 foot cats, but they feel like 19′ dinghies in these races.  Its great to watch Team Energy and Team USA Spithill on the finish to the fleet race; must see sailboat racing! This series is coming to Newport, RI at the end of June – check it out if you can.
