First day of racing on Menemsha Pond – July 6th

I entered my first Menemsha Pond race on July 6th.  In July and August there are weekly races on Wednesday and Saturday on Menemsha Pond.  You ca read all about it on the Sailmv site: http://tinyurl.com/menemsha-race. My wife, Maja, and I were going to race together, but the timing didn’t work out for my mother, and my sister and brother in-law wimped out of babysitting, so I ended up single handling.  It was a very windy and gust day!  Blowing 17-20 with gusts up to 25.  I certainly learned a lot about the Three Sisters on this first day of racing.  To start with:
  • The main sheet is too short and made for some exciting gusts where water was coming over the side of the boat
  • The jib sheets are too long, making it dangerous in the cockpit
  • The kick-up rudder kicked up, without my realizing it making it very hard to steer
  • I broke my tiller extension IMG_3321
Even with all this fun, I managed to take a 3rd place and a 4th place. Lovin’ having my own boat.
