2014 Launch Kicks-Off with a Bang

Its summertime in New England which means it time to launch the Three Sisters.  This off-season I gelcoated and bottom painted my Rhodes 19, and man is it awesome, it looks like a brand new boat.  I also finally put the Vinyl lettering for the Three Sisters on, which anyone who has done it knows is such a fun experience.   I also had my Dyer Dink dinghy cleaned up.  All the wood sanded and varnished and she also looks brand new. Dinghy-2014
With the lettering and name officially on, we performed the official naming ceremony for the Three Sisters with champagne and dedications to the winds gods. My family and I went on a beautiful sail on Menemsha Pond, and then spent a few hours having lunch and swimming off the boat. Of course no boat blog entry can really be complete without some mishaps.  While sailing I forgot to put a stopper knot in the center board line, and of course the line slipped past the block,  down through the centerboard trunk, and into the drink.  This was the first time I had to re-thread the centerboard line.  This entailed diving under the boat, grabbing the line and bringing it to the deck.  I then dropped a new line through the block and through the centerboard trunk, and dove under again and brought it up to the deck as well.  Finally I whipped the two lines together and pulled the the original line back through the trunk. The other stupid thing I did was drop the damn bottom part of my swim latter of f the stern while trying to attach it to the stern.  I always tie a line to things like an engine when moving it around on a boat, but for some damn reason I forgot to with the ladder.  At first I freaked out because I couldn’t see the ladder in the water, but I waited for low tide, saw it, and dove down and got it. So 2014 is off to a great start, and Menemsha Pond racing starts tomorrow, July 5th.
